Letters to Elected Officials

I. New

Members of Congress

TO: Members of Congress,

It is a busy time in the United States. There are massively complex budgets that must be passed and signed into law. There are wars, conflict, and tensions rising in the world. The people of the United States continue to be politically divided. In the midst of it all it may be easy to forget your Oath of Office.

As a brief reminder, Article VI, Clause 3 of the U.S. Constitution establishes the Oath of Office:

“I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter. So help me God.”

As you are aware, in the election outcome of 2024, Republicans were able to hold a slight advantage in the House of Representatives and gained control of the U.S. Senate, thus providing control of the Executive and Legislative Branches of government. While there are multiple and deep concerns regarding voter suppression, gerrymandering, and the Electoral College, based upon law, Republicans have every right to pass legislation and a budget that might not have widespread appeal (to say the least).

Regardless, voters did not pass an initiative allowing the President to suspend the Presidential Oath of Office, or determine which parts of the U.S. Constitution he will abide by, and which articles, sections, and amendments he can choose to ignore.

The Presidential Oath of Office:

“I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my Ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.”

Voters did not pass an initiative allowing for the appointment of a South African Billionaire (with questionable citizenship status) to accelerate the destruction of Federal Agencies (particularly those who have either penalized or were investigating Tesla, SpaceX, and his other business interests), to collect personal taxation, banking, social security, and healthcare data on Americans, and to help himself to billions of dollars of taxpayer money.

“…And no Person holding any Office of Profit or Trust under them, shall, without the Consent of the Congress, accept of any present, Emolument, Office, or Title, of any kind whatever, from any King, Prince, or foreign State.”

Amendment I

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speechor of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

Voters did not rescind the Impoundment Control Act of 1974.

The Impoundment Control Act of 1974 (ICA) is a U.S. federal law designed to reinforce Congress’s constitutional authority over federal spending and to prevent the President from unilaterally withholding or deferring funds that Congress has appropriated.

And this is especially important for Members of Congress:

Voters did not rescind or suspend the laws related to the Misprision of a felony.

Misprision of a Felony (18 U.S. Code § 4):

Definition:
“Whoever, having knowledge of the actual commission of a felony cognizable by a court of the United States, conceals and does not as soon as possible make known the same to some judge or other person in civil or military authority under the United States, shall be fined or imprisoned not more than three years, or both.”

While loyalty to political party is admirable, faithfully executing your Oath of Office and defending the rule of law is immutable and must supersede all else. It is your duty to support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic.

II. Foreign Policy and International Relations

Consequences of Trump’s Foreign Aid Suspension

Consequences of Trump’s Foreign Aid Suspension

Subject: Urgent: Consequences of Trump’s Foreign Aid Suspension

Dear [Elected Official’s Name],

I am writing to express my deep concern regarding the suspension of foreign aid under the Trump administration and the negative consequences it has had on global stability. The reduction in funding for international development programs has endangered critical humanitarian initiatives, as well as the partnerships that foster peace and mutual respect among nations.

Foreign aid is essential for promoting peace, reducing poverty, and addressing global challenges such as climate change and health crises. By halting this aid, we risk undermining decades of progress in developing nations and jeopardizing the global goodwill that benefits the U.S. and the world at large.

I urge you to stand up for responsible, effective foreign policy that promotes global cooperation and peace. Please work to restore funding for foreign aid programs that are crucial to the well-being of countless people worldwide.

Sincerely,
[Your Name]

Consequences of U.S. Withdrawal from the Paris Agreement

Subject: Urgent: Consequences of U.S. Withdrawal from the Paris Agreement

Dear [Elected Official’s Name],

I am extremely concerned about the U.S. withdrawal from the Paris Climate Agreement, a decision that undermines international efforts to combat climate change. The absence of U.S. leadership on this critical issue leaves a dangerous gap in global climate action and negatively impacts the future of our planet and future generations.

As a nation that contributes significantly to global emissions, the U.S. has a moral responsibility to play a leadership role in addressing the climate crisis. Rejoining the Paris Agreement is a crucial step in reaffirming our commitment to environmental protection and ensuring a sustainable future.

I ask that you advocate for policies that not only rejoin the Paris Agreement but also push for even stronger, more ambitious climate goals to secure a healthy and prosperous future for all.

Sincerely,
[Your Name]

III. Social Justice and Equality

Reversal of Transgender Protections and DEI Programs

Reversal of Transgender Protections and DEI Programs

Subject: Urgent Concern: Reversal of Transgender Protections and DEI Programs

Dear [Elected Official’s Name],

The recent actions to reverse protections for transgender individuals and dismantle Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs are deeply troubling. These measures undermine the hard-won progress we have made in fostering inclusive and equitable environments for all individuals, regardless of their gender identity or background.

The elimination of transgender protections exposes vulnerable individuals to discrimination and harm, while the dismantling of DEI programs sends a harmful message that diversity is not a priority. I urge you to advocate for policies that protect the rights of all citizens and ensure equitable access to opportunities for everyone, particularly marginalized communities.

Please take immediate action to reinstate these protections and support efforts to strengthen diversity and inclusion in our society.

Sincerely,
[Your Name]
[Your Address or ZIP Code]

Oppose Discriminatory Restrictions on Transgender Military Service

Subject: Oppose Discriminatory Restrictions on Transgender Military Service

Dear [Elected Official’s Name],

I am writing to express my opposition to any attempts to restrict the service of transgender individuals in the military. Transgender Americans, like all other service members, possess the strength, courage, and commitment to defend our country. Discriminatory restrictions undermine the principles of equality and fairness that our military stands for.

The ban on transgender military service has already caused significant harm, both to those individuals and to the military as a whole by excluding talented and qualified individuals from service. I urge you to support policies that allow all Americans, regardless of gender identity, to serve openly and honorably.

Please stand up for the rights of our transgender military personnel and advocate for a more inclusive approach.

Sincerely,
[Your Name]

IV. Civil Rights and Equal Opportunity

Consequences of Rescinding Affirmative Action for Federal Contractors

Consequences of Rescinding Affirmative Action for Federal Contractors

Subject: Urgent: Consequences of Rescinding Affirmative Action for Federal Contractors

Dear [Elected Official’s Name],

I am writing to express my concern about the potential rescinding of affirmative action for federal contractors. Such a move would roll back crucial protections for marginalized communities and exacerbate existing inequalities in the workplace. Affirmative action is vital in ensuring that federal contracts go to businesses that prioritize diversity and inclusion.

The elimination of these policies would undermine decades of progress made toward equal opportunity and fair treatment for all individuals, regardless of race, gender, or background. I urge you to protect and strengthen these policies to ensure that the workplace remains inclusive and equitable for everyone.

Sincerely,
[Your Name]

V. Immigration and Refugee Protection

Oppose the Border Wall and Immigration Restrictions

Oppose the Border Wall and Immigration Restrictions

Subject: Oppose the Border Wall and Immigration Restrictions

Dear [Elected Official’s Name],

I am writing to strongly oppose the construction of the border wall and other restrictive immigration policies. These measures are not only ineffective but also harmful to families, communities, and the nation as a whole. The border wall represents a waste of resources and a violation of basic human rights.

We must prioritize humane immigration policies that recognize the contributions of immigrants and address the root causes of migration. I urge you to advocate for a fair and compassionate immigration system that keeps families together and promotes the well-being of all people, regardless of their status.

Sincerely,
[Your Name]

VI. Environmental Protection and Climate Change

Support Stronger Environmental Regulations

Support Stronger Environmental Regulations

Subject: Support Stronger Environmental Regulations

Dear [Elected Official’s Name],

I am writing to urge you to support stronger environmental regulations that will protect our planet from the harmful effects of pollution and climate change. We are already seeing the devastating consequences of inaction, from rising sea levels to more frequent natural disasters.

Environmental regulations are critical in mitigating the damage caused by industrial activities and ensuring a sustainable future for generations to come. I encourage you to champion policies that promote clean energy, reduce emissions, and protect our natural resources.

Sincerely,
[Your Name]

VI. Democracy and Civic Engagement

Preserving Voter Rights and Access

Preserving Voter Rights and Access

Subject: Preserving Voter Rights and Access

Dear [Elected Official’s Name],

I am writing to express my concern about recent efforts to restrict voting access and disenfranchise voters, particularly in marginalized communities. Voting is a fundamental right that must be protected for all citizens, regardless of their background or circumstances.

I urge you to support legislation that expands voting rights, ensures access to the polls, and prevents any form of voter suppression. Every eligible voter must have the opportunity to participate in our democracy.

Sincerely,
[Your Name]

Oppose Voter ID Laws

Subject: Urgent: Oppose Voter ID Laws

Dear [Elected Official’s Name],

I am writing to voice my opposition to the implementation of voter ID laws that disproportionately affect low-income, elderly, and minority voters. These laws create unnecessary barriers to voting and undermine the principle of equal access to the democratic process.

Instead of imposing restrictive laws, we should be focused on making voting more accessible and ensuring that every eligible citizen can exercise their right to vote without undue obstacles.

I strongly urge you to oppose voter ID laws and work toward policies that protect voting rights for all.

Sincerely,
